Thoughts I Thunk while Thinking

Every day, I think an average of 12 thoughts, thought out into full-on ideas, scripts, scenes, accounts, or plans. I think them through so thoroughly in order to keep them in my mind. I don’t want to forget them. I play them out as scenes in a movie or clips from a YouTube video. I compose, edit, rewrite, compose again, put on different hats to critique myself, rewrite, and compose once more. Then, as time goes by, I completely forget about even having the thought.

I know what you’re thinking: “Just write it down. Then you won’t have to remember it. It will be documented on paper or in an app somewhere. When you want to come back to it, you just go to that note and continue building. It will relieve stress knowing you won’t forget it. You will feel better knowing this newest of great ideas is safety recorded for posterity.”

To that I would say: when did you get so smart, you smarty mcsmart smart?

Yes, that would be the intelligent thing to do. It would be the proper thing to do if I actually cared about these ideas. It would be the psychologically healthy thing to do; decreasing my stress and anxiety a bit. And I dare say it would be the smart thing do to. Which is technically different than intelligent and I don’t have to explain the difference to you Mr smarts mcbrains.

But the problem is a combination of the egotistical notion that all my ideas are pure gold and the naivete to think my ideas, even the small ones, are not important. Big things can result from a small idea.

And I guess the bigger problem is laziness. With a side of busyness. As is the case for most people, when I’m working on something monotonous, boring, redundant, or repetitive, then my mind is free to wander the realms of this mortal plane to fill the stimulation-free void left by the tasks at hand.

And usually that’s when I’m busy at work. Can’t really break out my notes app every time I have a genius idea while I’m trying to manage teenagers at an ice cream slash coffee shop. If they see me constantly on my phone typing, well, monkey-see monkey-do-way-more-than-is-healthy.

But it is a good idea.

You are smart.

And I appreciate you listening to me.
